TEST TASTE: Who loves Orange Soda?

Kel loves orange soda! Was it Kenan and Kel who made orange soda famous? Maybe. If you’re of a certain age, you’ll know the shout “KEL LOVES ORANGE SODA!”

The question we’ve always had is…which orange soda? On the TV show it was never a proper brand of course, but if Kel loves orange soda that much we want to know which real brand it would be!

Well, Kenan and Kel ended in 2000 so we’re never likely to find out. No matter, we’ll test them ourselves and see if we can figure out which one Kel would have preferred!

We chose three of our biggest orange soda sellers to go head to head in our latest taste test.

First up was Fanta Orange, by far the most well known brand. That was followed by Day’s Orange Soda, perhaps the least well known, and we finished with Crush Orange Soda, a very popular brand and well known in the States at least!

The Results

Here’s a surprise…the most satisfying “pop-fizz” when opening came from Day’s. We fur sure had our money on Fanta! But nope, it was definitely Day’s. The Fanta had a good one, but not a great one and the Crush was rather disappointing.

When the drinks hit our nostrils though, there were NO surprises. The Fanta smells like orange sherbet and gives you a nice little hit, while the Day’s is definitely more natural in smell. Not overpoweringly fruity but certainly less sweet than Fanta. Crush, despite its lack of “pop-fizz” had a very pleasant and more subtle aroma than either of the others. That proved to be areal favourite in our office.

But it’s the taste that matters, right?

Fanta Orange

If you read our grape soda taste test, you’ll know the Fanta version was really sweet. Their orange soda, however, isn’t quite as bad. It doesn’t stick to the teeth and it tastes much fresher on the tongue. There’s a strong flavour of orange in there and while you still get the sherbet feel you smell on opening the can it’s more of a background thing when you’re drinking it.

When you’re done with the can it lingers like a sweet citrus afterthought. All in all, a very good orange soda – we think Kel would approve!

Day’s Orange Soda

Now here’s a shock. The satisfying “pop-fizz” is a complete lie! Day’s orange soda is a surprisingly smooth, almost flat drinking experience! Certainly compared to Fanta anyway. This means there’s a lot more fruit flavour coming through and once again, it’s a sweet drink without being overpowering.

If you want a less gassy soda experience then this one is definitely worth trying. In almost every other way it’s like Fanta, just smoother and less gassy. Oh, and it lacks that sherbet effect, which again, helps the fruit come through. However, we think this would be TOO smooth for Kel!

Crush Orange Soda

Again, nowhere near as fizzy as Fanta, but more than Day’s. A happy medium if you will! Taste-wise, this also sits between the two, both in terms of sweetness and fruitiness. Clearly orange soda, it also has a deeper colour than the other two which makes it look more appealing. It’s nearly fluorescent.

This actually makes it look ever so slightly artificial. And so is the aftertaste. That doesn’t mean it’s not nice…it really is!…but it’s something you should be aware of when you’re buying.

Verdict

Kel, we think, would LOVE Fanta but only LIKE Day’s and Crush. The overall verdict in the office was pretty much the same, though Day’s was given a strong thumbs up too.

Which is your orange soda of choice?
